Retail

Blackpool town centre is at the heart of Britain’s most popular seaside resort – combining a shopping experience with a vibrant entertainment offer and some of the UK’s best known tourist landmarks.

The ongoing redevelopment of the town centre is a key part of Blackpool’s regeneration masterplan.

Key projects include:

Houndshill

The town centre offer has been greatly enhanced by the transformation of the Houndshill Shopping Centre with its owners, Modus, tripling the size of the centre to almost 400,000 sq ft.

Anchored by a Debenham’s department store, the scheme has already attracted many high street retailers, including H&M, New Look, Next and River Island.

An independent retailers’ scheme has been launched to encourage local retailers to participate in this scheme

Talbot Gateway

A £220m scheme that will transform the Talbot Road area. It will turn the area around the bus station into an attractive, pedestrian-friendly civic and cultural quarter, incorporating a new food store, civic offices, shops, cafes and restaurants, residential apartments and parking.

Muse Developments has been appointed as developer and work is estimated to start in 2010 with completion by 2013.

St John’s Precinct

This will create a largely pedestrianised piazza environment with street pavement cafes and markets outside the historic St John’s Church. Work is expected to start in 2008 with completion by July 2009.

Regeneration By Light

Phase 1 has already commenced and includes the installation of a new welcoming beacon on top of Blackpool Tower and architectural lighting of the Town Hall. Phase 2 will incorporate an exciting new year-round illuminations spectacle featuring a centrepiece sound and light show in Birley Street.

Town Centre Business Improvement District

In October 2005, Blackpool Town Centre established the first Business Improvement District in the North West.

It is a partnership of around 750 town centre businesses and organisations working for the improvement of business and the environment for the benefit of all.

The Wider Retail Offer

Although the town centre is the focal point of Blackpool’s retail offer, there is much more besides. There are vibrant shopping areas in areas such as South Shore, Bispham and Whitegate Drive.
