Improving quality standards is an integral part to achieving a world class competitive accommodation industry in England. The vision is ‘world class tourism in England’, which means a product of at least comparative quality with other world leading tourism destinations. To achieve a quality product, all elements of the tourism experience must meet or exceed consumer expectations.
The raising of standards is crucial to the future development of English tourism.
This is met by working towards, and achieving, an Accreditation.
What is Quality? The following are taken into account when an accreditation assessment takes place:-
- Intrinsic quality – the inherent value of an item
- Condition – the maintenance and appearance of an item. Is it fit for the purpose?
- Physical and personal comfort – does the quality or lack of an item detract in any way from the comfort of the guest?
- Attention to detail – the evident care taken to ensure that the guest experience is special and offer the same high standards for all guests
- Guest choice and ease of use – the guest experience is enhanced through choice – be it the choice of beverages in his/her room or the choice of room temperature. This is further improved by how usable the guest finds the room and its contents
- Presentation – the way the room and its contents are presented for guests’ arrival and during their stay
Accreditation is a demonstration that you, and the business you operate, meet the minimum entry requirements of each individual accreditation scheme. Showing a quality marque enables participation in membership of the Scheme chosen by the establishment. Accredited properties also give access to marketing and advertising opportunities, and gives the property the quality marque which in turn enables prospective visitors to be able to make an informed choice as to the type of accommodation they are to stay in before making a reservation.
There are two National Schemes available to participate in, administered by Visit Britain, and the AA – the ‘Star’ Scheme.
The Schemes cover the Serviced (Hotels and Guest Accommodation) and Non Serviced (Self Catering) sectors of the Industry, however the AA do not inspect Self Catering properties.
There are currently grants available to help you become Nationally Accredited.
